Initial Development of an Air-Jet Dry Powder Inhaler for Rapid Delivery of Pharmaceutical Aerosols to Infants

Connor Howe et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a positive-pressure air-jet DPI platform for high-efficiency aerosol delivery to newborn infants via the nose-to-lung route. Designs with the best aerosolization performance were connected to a smoothly expanding nasal interface and full-term infant nose-throat (NT) model with tracheal filter, achieving >80% emitted dose of loaded dose and desired mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD). In vitro testing showed that the associated infant air-jet DPI system could rapidly and efficiently deliver aerosol to infant lungs.
