Efficient second harmonic generation in lithium niobate on insulator waveguides and its pitfalls

Andreas Boes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the second harmonic generation in periodically poled lithium niobate on insulator waveguides, focusing on the lateral leakage losses in X-cut and Z-cut LN for the fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths. The results show that Z-cut lithium niobate on insulator is more likely to suffer from lateral leakage and has lower SHG efficiency. Design guidelines for highly efficient nonlinear optical waveguides in LNOI are provided, emphasizing on the avoidance of lateral leakage.
