Tokamak discharge simulation coupling free-boundary equilibrium and plasma model with application to JT-60SA

V Ostuni et al.

Summary: The fast integrated tokamak modeling tool METIS is coupled with the quasi-static free-boundary magnetic equilibrium code FEEQS to simulate a full tokamak discharge scenario design. The outputs generated by the first code are used iteratively by the second code to compute the poloidal field coils currents needed, making the approach faster and complementary to full simulators. The results are benchmarked with TOSCA code data and illustrated through the optimization of a reference scenario of the JT-60SA tokamak.

Design of JT-60SA core Thomson scattering diagnostic system

H. Tojo et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the design and features of an incoherent Thomson scattering diagnostic to be installed in the JT-60SA tokamak, which can measure electron temperature and density profiles in plasma under limited design space and harsh radiation conditions. The optics system is designed to allow for replacement of lens materials with radiation resistant glasses in the future to maintain measurement accuracy.

In-vessel components for initial operation of JT-60SA

M. Takechi et al.

Summary: For the initial operation of JT-60SA, minimum sets of in-vessel components were installed with precision to ensure the accuracy of each component. This included the inboard first wall, upper divertor, protection limiter, glow electrodes, and magnetic sensors, which were all installed within required accuracy through in-situ measurement and customization based on laser tracker data and 3D CAD.

Manufacturing of lower divertor cassette of JT-60SA

Takao Hayashi et al.

Summary: The first divertor cassette covering a 10 degrees sector in the toroidal direction has been manufactured for JT-60SA. This cassette includes plasma facing components that are actively cooled and can handle high heat loads. A remote pipe welding tool has been developed for installation and maintenance, with a focus on accurate control of the laser welding process.

Design of stabilizing plate of JT-60SA

Satoshi Yamamoto et al.

Summary: The stabilizing plate (SP) of JT-60SA is designed based on electromagnetic and structural analysis to serve as a passive stabilizer of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instability and a first wall at the low field side. It has a double skin structure with high strength and resistivity. The electromagnetic force induced by disruption and the structural analysis have been calculated using finite element method, and modifications were made to the SP to meet stress requirements.

Structural design of pedestal for error field correction coil in JT-60SA

Shigetoshi Nakamura et al.

Summary: Eighteen error field correction coils (EFCCs) made of copper conductor and epoxy resin are installed in the vacuum vessel of JT-60SA to correct magnetic fields caused by manufacturing and installation errors of superconducting coils. The support pedestals, made of stainless steel 316 L with NCF625 spring bars, need to withstand electromagnetic force and magnetic field during plasma operations, while allowing relative displacement between EFCC and the vacuum vessel during baking operations at different temperatures. The design of the spring bars and connection structure was determined through FEM analysis.
