Developments towards an ELM-free pedestal radiative cooling scenario using noble gas seeding in ASDEX Upgrade

A. Kallenbach et al.

Summary: By investigating the use of argon seeding for radiative power removal in ASDEX Upgrade, studies have shown the potential for achieving ELM-free or small ELM scenarios in the demonstration fusion power plant. Argon radiation can modify the electron pressure in the pedestal, leading to ELM suppression and divertor enrichment. Additionally, differences in divertor enrichment between neon and argon have been observed, with argon showing higher enrichment potential.

Development of Ar+16 charge exchange recombination spectroscopy measurements at ASDEX Upgrade

R. M. McDermott et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of argon as a radiator for future fusion devices, emphasizing the importance of accurate measurement of argon density. Experimental validation of two main sets of argon cross-section data shows that the UAM data is more accurate than the ORNL data, but still requires minor corrections for producing accurate argon density profiles.

Impact of plasma density/collisionality on divertor heat flux width

N. M. Li et al.

Summary: Based on both ASDEX-Upgrade (AUG) data and the generalized HD (GHD) model, it is shown that the scrape-off width broadens as the density/collisionality increases. Through a series of BOUT++ transport simulations, it is found that the divertor heat flux width can be broadened due to the transition of the SOL residence time as the collisionality/density increases, even in the drift dominated regime. Additionally, as the density increases, the radial electric field (E-r) well shallows, potentially weakening E-r x B flow shear stabilization of turbulence at high density.

Approaching detachment in I-mode-response of core confinement and the edge pedestal in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

T. Happel et al.

Summary: Experiments on nitrogen assisted divertor detachment in the improved energy confinement mode (I-mode) show that introducing nitrogen leads to cooling of the divertor plasma, resulting in a loss of core confinement and an increase in low frequency edge fluctuation levels. Additional heating power input can compensate for the loss in confinement and maintain the I-mode. Good energy confinement properties are reported during the detachment of the inner divertor leg in these experiments.

Fast-ion pressure dominating the mass dependence of the core heat transport in ASDEX Upgrade H-modes

P. A. Schneider et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there is little isotopic dependence in core heat transport between H and D plasmas at low fast-ion content, but an isotope dependence is observed at high fast-ion fractions. The fast-ion pressure in H and D plasmas differs for comparable NBI heating powers in AUG. Gyrokinetic analysis shows that linear growth rates of ITG modes follow the experimentally observed mass dependence when considering collisions, EM-effects, and fast ions. Non-linear gyrokinetic simulations reproduce the experimental heat fluxes for different isotopes when fast ions are included, indicating the key role of fast-ion pressure in explaining differences in the core of H and D plasmas.

Poloidally resolved measurements of the perpendicular propagation velocity of density fluctuations in ASDEX Upgrade L-mode plasmas

K. Hoefler et al.

Summary: Poloidal asymmetries in the propagation velocity of density fluctuations perpendicular to the magnetic field, measured with Doppler reflectometry, have been reported in some magnetic confinement plasma devices, but a careful analysis of various low confinement mode plasma scenarios at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak did not reveal such asymmetry. The investigation showed that the poloidal dependence of the E x B drift velocity remains consistent regardless of the probed turbulence structure size.

Geometry dependence of the fluctuation intensity in gyrokinetic turbulence

G. M. Staebler et al.

Summary: The investigation focuses on the properties of 3D saturated fluctuation intensity of electric potential in gyrokinetic turbulence simulations, using linear eigenmodes and geometry shape functions to construct a model for accurate calculation of electron and ion energy flux poloidal wavenumber spectrum. New insights are gained into the way zonal flow mixing saturates ion-scale turbulence by controlling the radial wavenumber width of the turbulence spectrum.

The upgraded ASDEX Upgrade contribution to the ITPA confinement database: description and analysis

F. Ryter et al.

Summary: The ITPA multi-machine confinement database has recently been extended to include data from ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks with metallic plasma facing components. The transition from carbon to metallic wall had limited the operation at low density, while similarities were found at medium and high densities. Plasma current and magnetic field dependencies, as well as the impact of triangularity, were clear in the analysis.

Broadening of the power fall-off length in a high density, high confinement H-mode regime in ASDEX Upgrade

M. Faitsch et al.

Summary: Thermography measurements at ASDEX Upgrade show an increase in power fall-off length in a high density, high confinement H-mode regime, correlated to an increased filament detection rate and pressure close to the separatrix. This broadening decreases peak heat flux and leads to continuous transport into the scrape-off layer and onto the divertor.

Summary: The study tested the quasi-linear transport models TGLF and QuaLiKiz against experimental results, finding good agreement between profiles obtained from TGLF-SAT1geo and experimental profiles for electron and ion temperatures. However, there is a slight tendency for the model to underpredict central temperatures at high electron/ion temperature ratios.

Overview of the isotope effects in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

P. A. Schneider et al.

Summary: Measurements on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak and modelling for plasmas with hydrogen and deuterium have improved understanding of the ion mass dependencies in fusion plasmas. The observed isotope effects can be explained with established physics processes, pointing to the importance of coupled electron and ion heat channels. Mass dependence of turbulent transport and heat transport play key roles in core confinement and the L-H transition.

The separatrix operational space of ASDEX Upgrade due to interchange-drift-Alfven turbulence

T. Eich et al.

Summary: The efficient operation of a tokamak is limited by several constraints, which can be derived through a combination of dimensionless parameters describing interchange-drift-Alfven turbulence. The operational space at the separatrix of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is presented in terms of an electron density and temperature existence diagram. The derived density limits are compared against Greenwald scaling, and the power threshold and role of ion heat flux for the transition to high confinement are discussed.
