Fusion performance of spherical and conventional tokamaks: implications for compact pilot plants and reactors

A. E. Costley et al.

Summary: Spherical tokamaks have the potential for higher fusion power production due to their features such as high beta values and operation at high self-driven 'bootstrap' current. The thermal energy confinement time has a weaker dependence on plasma current, resulting in higher fusion triple product and power gain compared to conventional tokamaks for similar field and fusion power values. This enhanced performance is attributed to the smaller volume of spherical tokamaks, offering a potentially faster route to fusion power production.
