Summary: The study found that moderate-intensity VNS paired with rehabilitation training maximizes recovery of motor function in models of ischemic stroke. VNS at 0.8 mA was beneficial for functional recovery, while VNS at 0.4 mA and 1.6 mA were not sufficient to improve recovery compared to equivalent rehabilitation without VNS.

Summary: This study reviewed the experience of treating pediatric patients with vagus nerve stimulator implantation and found that early implantation within 5 years of seizure onset was the key predictor of favorable clinical outcomes. Most patients showed improved quality of life after surgery, although a small percentage experienced adverse events.

Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Humans Induces Pupil Dilation and Attenuates Alpha Oscillations

Summary: In this study, the short-term effects of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) in healthy male volunteers were investigated. The results showed that tVNS led to robust pupil dilation and greater attenuation of occipital alpha oscillations compared to sham stimulation, indicating that tVNS can induce arousal markers beyond somatosensory stimulation and mimic the effects of invasive VNS.

Summary: This study suggests that non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation may alleviate vertigo, headache, and nystagmus associated with vestibular migraine attacks. Further larger, sham device-controlled studies are needed to elucidate the benefits of nVNS in vestibular migraine.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) for migraine: an fMRI study

Summary: In this study, it was found that after 4 weeks of taVNS treatment, patients in the taVNS group had significantly reduced number of headache days, pain intensity, and migraine attack times. Functional connectivity analysis revealed that taVNS can increase the connectivity between the motor-related thalamic subregion and anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex, and decrease the connectivity between occipital cortex-related thalamic subregion and postcentral gyrus/precuneus.
