Sex differences in dopamine release regulation in the striatum

Jennifer E. Zachry et al.

Summary: The mesolimbic dopamine system plays a crucial role in sex-specific behavior and psychiatric diseases, with local regulatory mechanisms modulating dopamine release in the striatum. Sex differences in microcircuit regulatory mechanisms can alter dopamine dynamics between males and females, controlled and regulated by hormonal mechanisms. Understanding these systems and bridging the gaps in knowledge will be key in developing effective therapies targeting dopamine function in both sexes.
