MRI monitoring of macaque monkeys in neuroscience: Case studies, resource and normative data comparisons

Fabien Balezeau et al.

Summary: MRI plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment management of human neurological patients and may also be beneficial for non-human animals in neuroscience research. With the lack of established MRI monitoring in macaques, there is an urgent need for a resource that can grow with contributions from the scientific community.

Common fronto-temporal effective connectivity in humans and monkeys

Francesca Rocchi et al.

Summary: This study found comparable effective connectivity patterns between macaque monkeys and humans in brain pathways supporting language and memory, with human-specific differences in hemispheric lateralization effects. Additionally, rapid evoked potentials were observed between the auditory cortex and VLPFC in humans, indicating direct projections similar to those seen in monkeys.

Transient ultrasound stimulation has lasting effects on neuronal excitability

Benjamin Clennell et al.

Summary: The study found that transcranial ultrasound stimulation enhances the excitability of neurons for up to 8 hours, with modifications to action potential kinetics. These changes do not affect the intrinsic membrane properties or synaptic ultrastructure of neurons.

Effective connectivity and spatial selectivity-dependent fMRI changes elicited by microstimulation of pulvinar and LIP

Igor Kagan et al.

Summary: This study compared the effective connectivity of dorsal pulvinar (dPul) and lateral intraparietal area (LIP) and found overlapping and distinct patterns of thalamocortical and corticocortical connections between the two regions, with LIP showing more extensive activation along the intraparietal sulcus. Task-specific correlations between spatial selectivity and stimulation effects were observed, and the modulation of task-related activity by stimulation was best fitted by an additive model scaled down by the initial response amplitude.

CIVET-Macaque: An automated pipeline for MRI-based cortical surface generation and cortical thickness in macaques

Claude Lepage et al.

Summary: The MNI CIVET pipeline has been extended to process macaque brains using the NMT template and D99, CHARM atlases for anatomical parcellation. Processing of anatomical scans of approximately 126 macaques using CIVET-macaque is expected to promote collaborative efforts and advance the field of non-human primate brain imaging.

Using non-invasive neuroimaging to enhance the care, well-being and experimental outcomes of laboratory non-human primates (monkeys)

M. A. Basso et al.

Summary: Over the past decades, non-invasive imaging methods, particularly MRI, have become increasingly popular in neuroscience for studying brain structure and function. The use of MRI has not only improved surgical procedures and implants, but also enhanced diagnosis and monitoring for brain disease. Collaborating experts aim to guide researchers and veterinarians in using this imaging technology to improve the well-being and experimental outcomes for laboratory animals.

Electrical stimulation of the macaque ventral tegmental area drives category-selective learning without attention

Sjoerd R. Murris et al.

Summary: Repeated practice with visual stimuli, known as visual perceptual learning (VPL), can improve cognition. The interplay of attentional and neuromodulatory reward signals is proposed to cause changes in behavior and neural activity, although VPL can also occur without attention. Pairing subliminal complex visual stimuli with electrical microstimulation of the ventral tegmental area (VTA-EM) can lead to category-selective task-irrelevant VPL, accompanied by changes in neural representations in various brain regions in macaques.

Population receptive fields in nonhuman primates from whole-brain fMRI and large-scale neurophysiology in visual cortex

P. Christiaan Klink et al.

Summary: The research indicates that fMRI-based pRF maps reliably reflect neuronal receptive field properties in the primate brain, especially in areas V1 and V4. In addition, whole-brain fMRI measurements reveal retinotopic tuning in many other areas, as well as a retinotopically specific deactivation of default mode network nodes.
