Role of Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization to Enable a Net-Zero-CO2-Emissions Aviation Sector

Viola Becattini et al.

Summary: This study presents viable scenarios for the aviation industry to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions, with a focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU). The research shows that point-source capture and storage of carbon is the most cost-effective solution, and it is already cost-competitive with business as usual (BAU) scenarios.

The water footprint of carbon capture and storage technologies

Lorenzo Rosa et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is an important technology to reduce fossil CO2 emissions and water footprint assessment shows that Bioenergy with CCS has the highest water footprint per tonne CO2 captured. Diversified portfolio of CCS technologies in climate mitigation scenarios have lower impacts on water resources. Water-scarce regions should prioritize water-efficient CCS technologies in their mitigation goals.

Life-cycle assessment of an industrial direct air capture process based on temperature-vacuum swing adsorption

Sarah Deutz et al.

Summary: Direct air capture technology can achieve negative emissions, but its benefits depend on the energy source. Large-scale deployment of direct air capture is not limited by material and energy availability, but the production of amines for adsorbents needs to be scaled up. Energy source and efficiency are crucial for achieving negative emissions and low-carbon fuels with direct air capture.

Understanding the Effect of Water on CO2 Adsorption

Joel M. Kolle et al.

Summary: Carbon capture from large sources and ambient air is an effective strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Among the various technologies, CO2 adsorption is a popular method due to its energy efficiency. The presence of water vapor in air and industrial gas streams rich in CO2 has a significant impact on CO2 adsorption, with water acting as both an inhibitor and promoter depending on the adsorbent used. Further research is needed to fully understand the effects of water on CO2 capture using different materials.

Defining Targets for Adsorbent Material Performance to Enable Viable BECCS Processes

Hannah E. Holmes et al.

Summary: This study defines the target properties of CO2 capture adsorbents that would ensure economic viability of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), emphasizing working capacity, lifetime, heat of adsorption, and exponential degradation decay constants. The research predicts that a BECCS process cost of $65/t-CO2 can be achieved with specific adsorbent properties, including cost, working capacity, heat of adsorption, and minimum lifetime.

New chemistry for enhanced carbon capture: beyond ammonium carbamates

Alexander C. Forse et al.

Summary: Although aqueous amine scrubbers are effective at removing CO2, they have limitations, thus the exploration of new CO2 capture chemistry such as ionic liquids and metal-organic frameworks is necessary. These new approaches may offer advantages including higher sorption capacities and lower regeneration energies, but further research is needed for practical applications.
