Dynamic adult tracheal plasticity drives stem cell adaptation to changes in intestinal homeostasis in Drosophila

Summary: In Drosophila, a previously unrecognized crosstalk between adult intestinal stem cells and the vasculature-like tracheal system has been uncovered, which is essential for intestinal regeneration. Gut-derived reactive oxygen species activate tracheal signaling pathways, leading to reversible remodeling of gut-associated terminal tracheal cells and intestinal stem cell proliferation. This inter-organ communication program is crucial for adapting the stem cell response to the proliferative demands of the intestinal epithelium.
