Analysis and interpretation of forest fire data of Sikkim

Kapila Sharma et al.

Summary: Forest ecosystems are depleting and heading towards degradation, with forest fires being a major factor. A study on forest fire in Sikkim from 2004 to 2014 revealed an increasing trend in incidents, with the year 2009 being the most severe. Factors such as low rainfall, dry winter season, and type of vegetation were found to be the main contributors to forest fires in this region.

Maximum entropy-based forest fire likelihood mapping: analysing the trends, distribution, and drivers of forest fires in Sikkim Himalaya

Polash Banerjee

Summary: The recent forest fires in Brazil and Australia in 2019 serve as tragic reminders of the dangers of forest fires. Human encroachment into the wilderness and climate change are contributing to a global increase in forest fire incidents. A study in Sikkim reveals that climatic conditions and proximity to roads are major factors influencing forest fires. The development of a forest fire prediction map using GIS and machine learning can help stakeholders take informed mitigation measures.

The effect of species, size, and fire intensity on tree mortality within a catastrophic bushfire complex

Raphael Trouve et al.

Summary: The study reveals that different tree species have varying susceptibilities to fire-induced mortality, with Eucalyptus obliqua being the most resistant. High-intensity fires lead to compositional shifts in cool temperate rainforest and mixed forest sites. Resprouting plays a crucial role in the adaptation to fire in these landscapes.

Deep neural networks for global wildfire susceptibility modelling

Guoli Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper compares and analyzes the application of two feedforward neural network models (CNNs and MLPs) in global wildfire susceptibility prediction, and explores the interpretability of the CNNs model. By constructing response variables and monthly wildfire predictors, four MLPs and CNNs architectures were built, and five statistical measures were used to evaluate the prediction performance of the models. The contextual-based CNN-2D model was found to have the highest accuracy, while the MLPs model was more suitable for pixel-based classification, and the performance ranking of the four models was CNN-2D > MLP-1D > MLP-2D > CNN-1D.

Summary: Ensemble models combining LWL algorithm with CG, Bagging, Decorate, and Dagging techniques were used to predict forest fire susceptibility in Pu Mat National Park, Vietnam, with CG-LWL and Bagging-LWL models showing the highest training performance. These models enhance researchers' understanding of model building processes and can be applied to predict other natural hazards by considering local geo-environmental factors.
