Real-space observation of vibrational strong coupling between propagating phonon polaritons and organic molecules

Andrei Bylinkin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates vibrational strong coupling between propagating phonon polaritons in thin van der Waals crystals and molecular vibrations in adjacent thin molecular layers through nanoimaging. Near-field polariton interferometry shows the formation of a propagating hybrid mode with a pronounced anti-crossing region, exhibiting propagation with negative group velocity. Numerical calculations predict vibrational strong coupling in nanometre-thin molecular layers and phonon polaritons in few-layer van der Waals materials, making propagating phonon polaritons a promising platform for ultrasensitive on-chip spectroscopy and strong-coupling experiments.

Guided Mid-IR and Near-IR Light within a Hybrid Hyperbolic-Material/Silicon Waveguide Heterostructure

Mingze He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/silicon hybrid waveguide can enable dual-band operation at both mid-infrared and telecom frequencies without the need for deleterious etching. Integrating hyperbolic media with silicon photonics enables frequency multiplexing in on-chip photonic systems.

Polariton waveguide modes in two-dimensional van der Waals crystals: an analytical model and correlative nano-imaging

Fengsheng Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, an analytical waveguide model is developed to describe polariton propagations in van der Waals crystals. The model is verified by real-space optical nano-imaging and numerical simulation, providing an analytical rationale for understanding the localized electromagnetic fields associated with polaritons in van der Waals crystals. The proposed model is applicable to other polaritonic crystals within the van der Waals family with corresponding dielectric substitutions.

Polariton panorama

D. N. Basov et al.

Summary: This brief review summarizes and elaborates on the nomenclature of polaritonic phenomena and systems in the literature on quantum materials and quantum optics, including at least 70 different types of polaritonic light-matter dressing effects. It also unravels a broad panorama of the physics and applications of polaritons, with a constantly updated version available at https://infrared.cni.columbia.edu.
