The KMOS3D Survey: Investigating the Origin of the Elevated Electron Densities in Star-forming Galaxies at 1 ≲ z ≲ 3

Rebecca L. Davies et al.

Summary: The study investigates the redshift evolution of electron density (n(e)) in star-forming galaxies, using samples primarily from KMOS3D (0.6 < z < 2.6) and SAMI (z < 0.113). Results show variations in n(e) at different redshifts, with n(e) decreasing from high to low redshifts, and a potential link between n(e) evolution and the evolving main sequence normalization.

The physics of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies

Piyush Sharda et al.

Summary: The model presented in the study explains the evolution of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies, showing that they are influenced by various ratios and are mostly in equilibrium. It can account for the variations in gradients observed in different galaxies, as well as the evolutionary trends of gradients with redshift.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: reconciling strong emission line metallicity diagnostics using metallicity gradients

Henry Poetrodjojo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates significant systematic discrepancies in gas-phase metallicity gradients derived using common strong emission line diagnostics, with conversions provided to allow accurate comparison. There are discrepancies of up to 0.11 dex/R-e between seven popular diagnostics in the metallicity gradient-mass relation. The study suggests a break in the metallicity gradient-mass relation, with conversions reducing the maximum dispersion from 0.11 dex/R-e to 0.02 dex/R-e.

On the origin of the mass-metallicity gradient relation in the local Universe

Piyush Sharda et al.

Summary: Recent observations suggest that the metallicity gradient in local galaxies varies systematically with galaxy mass. Low-mass galaxies tend to lose metals while massive galaxies show a flattening of gradients, regardless of the nature of their winds. The shape of the gradient is affected by metal production and the addition of metal-poor gas.

FROM GLOBAL TO SPATIALLY RESOLVED IN LOW-REDSHIFT GALAXIES

S. F. Sanchez et al.

Summary: Our understanding of the structure, composition, and evolution of galaxies has greatly improved in recent decades, mainly due to new results from large spectroscopic and imaging surveys. The nature of ionized gas, its relation with stellar properties and chemical composition, scaling relations between stars and gas, and evolution patterns have been extensively explored and described. The introduction of additional techniques, particularly integral field spectroscopy, has led to a re-interpretation of recent results from a spatially resolved perspective.

Detection of metallicity correlations in 100 nearby galaxies

Zefeng Li et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the 2D gas-phase oxygen abundance distributions of 100 nearby galaxies and computes the related correlation functions. The study finds higher-than-expected correlations in the majority of targets, with characteristic correlation lengths and relationships with stellar mass and star formation rate. Results suggest that 2D metallicity correlation functions can be a powerful tool for studying galaxy evolution.

Quasi-equilibrium models of high-redshift disc galaxy evolution

Steven R. Furlanetto

Summary: Recent studies have shown that simple models of galaxy formation can accurately match data on high-redshift luminosity functions. These models, while primarily phenomenological, provide insights into the physics of galaxy evolution. New galaxy models introduced here are based on a simple physical framework but incorporate more sophisticated models of feedback, star formation, and other processes.

The evolution of gas-phase metallicity and resolved abundances in star-forming galaxies at z ≈ 0.6-1.8

S. Gillman et al.

Summary: By analyzing approximately 650 star-forming galaxies at redshifts around 0.6-1.8 with integral-field observations, this study establishes the stellar mass-metallicity relation, investigates the radial dependence of gas-phase metallicity, and quantifies the evolution of metallicity gradients. It is found that more highly star-forming, larger, and irregular galaxies tend to have lower gas-phase metallicities for a given stellar mass, which may be attributed to their lower surface mass densities and higher gas fractions in irregular systems. The metallicity gradients of galaxies show no significant dependence on radius on average, and exhibit flatter profiles compared to local star-forming galaxies, in agreement with numerical models involving stellar feedback.
