Type Ia supernovae from wide white dwarfs triples

Erez Michaely

Summary: In ultra-wide systems, triple white dwarfs can be perturbed by flyby stars to become dynamically unstable, potentially leading to direct collisions between white dwarfs and Type Ia supernova events. If direct collisions do not occur, the formation of compact binaries through resonant encounters and subsequent mergers via gravitational wave emission is likely, resembling the classic double-degenerate scenario. The estimated galactic rates of Type Ia supernovae from direct collisions range from 0.11-3.76%, primarily from the double-degenerate channel with uncertainties influenced by population demographics and galaxy types.

Intermediate-mass Black Holes from High Massive-star Binary Fractions in Young Star Clusters

Elena Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The study found that in young star clusters with low metallicity and high binary star fractions, several black holes within the mass gap and at least one intermediate-mass black hole can be formed naturally through dynamical interactions.

Black Hole Mergers from Star Clusters with Top-heavy Initial Mass Functions

Newlin C. Weatherford et al.

Summary: Recent observations of globular clusters suggest that the stellar initial mass function varies with metallicity and gas density, impacting black hole formation and cluster evolution. Calculating new GC models, it is found that clusters with top-heavy IMFs lose mass rapidly and evolve into dark clusters dominated by BHs. Additionally, these clusters produce more BBH mergers and even intermediate-mass black holes, contributing significantly to the local BBH merger rate detectable by LIGO/Virgo. Ultimately, further gravitational wave observations will shed light on the stellar IMF in old GCs and the formation of IMBHs at high redshifts.

Massive Stellar Triples Leading to Sequential Binary Black Hole Mergers in the Field

Alejandro Vigna-Gomez et al.

Summary: This study explores the evolution of stellar triples with massive components leading to sequential binary black hole mergers, suggesting that these mergers can also occur outside of dense dynamical environments. The research also analyzes the evolution of two gravitational-wave sources, GW170729 and GW190521, proposing that the former originates from a low-metallicity field triple and arguing against the latter being formed in the field. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of triple stellar evolution in understanding gravitational wave sources and other energetic transients.
