Stellar-mass black holes in young massive and open stellar clusters - IV. Updated stellar-evolutionary and black hole spin models and comparisons with the LIGO-Virgo O1/O2 merger-event data

Sambaran Banerjee

Summary: This study conducted long-term, direct, relativistic many-body computations in model dense stellar clusters using up-to-date stellar-evolutionary, supernova, and remnant natal-kick models. The results showed that these models can produce dynamically paired black hole mergers that are in agreement with observations, while also suggesting that young massive clusters and moderately massive open clusters may produce detectable gravitational wave sources.

Search for Gravitational Waves from High-Mass-Ratio Compact-Binary Mergers of Stellar Mass and Subsolar Mass Black Holes

Alexander H. Nitz et al.

Summary: This study conducted the first search for gravitational waves from the coalescence of stellar mass and subsolar mass black holes, setting upper limits on the merger rates based on the non-detection of significant candidate signals. The results contribute to our understanding of the potential existence of primordial black holes and their role as a component of dark matter.

Progenitors of low-mass binary black-hole mergers in the isolated binary evolution scenario

Federico Garcia et al.

Summary: Through extensive simulations, we found that the formation of the binary black holes depends strongly on the initial masses of the stars and the stellar winds. The common-envelope phase plays a critical role in the merging process, influencing the expected merger rates. A high-efficiency scenario with a specific value for the common-envelope efficiency parameter is favored based on comparing the predicted rates with observed data.

The impact of mass-transfer physics on the observable properties of field binary black hole populations

Simone S. Bavera et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of mass-transfer physics on observable properties of binary black hole populations and finds that low common envelope efficiency results in tighter orbits and more tidal spin-up. In the detectable population, all non-zero spin systems come from the common envelope channel, with a local rate density range of 17-113 Gpc(-3) yr(-1), while the stable mass transfer channel has a rate density of 25 Gpc(-3) yr(-1.

The cosmic merger rate density of compact objects: impact of star formation, metallicity, initial mass function, and binary evolution

Filippo Santoliquido et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the redshift distribution of binary black hole, black hole-neutron star binary, and binary neutron star mergers, investigating the impact of factors such as star formation rate density, metallicity evolution, and common envelope on merger rates. The results show that the merger rate of binary neutron stars is almost insensitive to metallicity, making them an ideal test bed for constraining uncertain binary evolution processes.

Stellar-mass black holes in young massive and open stellar clusters - V. comparisons with LIGO-Virgo merger rate densities

Sambaran Banerjee

Summary: The study focuses on the contribution of young massive star clusters and open star clusters to the merger rate density of binary black holes. It finds that the dynamical interactions in these clusters can explain the merger rate density and its evolution. The predicted merger rate densities agree with observational data and improve our understanding of compact binary merger channels.

One Channel to Rule Them All? Constraining the Origins of Binary Black Holes Using Multiple Formation Pathways

Michael Zevin et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the second batch of LIGO-Virgo gravitational wave catalog using five binary black hole population models, finding that multiple formation channels contribute to the observed sample of binary black holes and no single channel dominates the detections. Results also showed a preference for natal spins of isolated black holes less than or equal to 0.1 and common-envelope efficiencies of around 2.0.

Probing Multiple Populations of Compact Binaries with Third-generation Gravitational-wave Detectors

Ken K. Y. Ng et al.

Summary: Third-generation gravitational-wave detectors can observe binary black hole mergers up to a redshift of about 30, allowing for unprecedented study of the formation and evolution of binary black holes throughout cosmic history. This paper considers three subpopulations of binary black holes from different evolutionary channels, and uses population synthesis analyses to generate simulated data for studying the merger rate characteristics of different formation channels.

Population Properties of Compact Objects from the Second LIGO-Virgo Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: The study reveals unique characteristics of the merging binary black hole (BBH) population, including a specific primary mass spectrum and misaligned component spins leading to precession of the orbital plane. The research also estimates merger rates, indicating potential correlation between BBH rate and redshift but not exceeding the star formation rate. Additionally, recent exceptional events are examined in relation to population models, with GW190814 being identified as an outlier due to its low secondary mass.

Binary black hole mergers from hierarchical triples in open clusters

Dylan Britt et al.

Summary: Researchers explore the Lidov-Kozai-induced black hole mergers in open clusters and find a high merger rate density in the local Universe, with a significant proportion of mergers occurring during the cluster phase. This suggests that a substantial fraction of mergers from hierarchical triples occur within star-forming regions in spiral galaxies.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.
