CO2 enhanced gas recovery and sequestration in depleted gas reservoirs: A review

Ahmed Hamza et al.

Summary: Depleted gas reservoirs are considered safe and reliable storage sites for sequestering CO2, with the potential for cost reduction through incremental recovery of residual natural gas after CO2 injection. Research on CO2 adsorption/desorption characteristics in depleted gas reservoirs and applications in unconventional resources contribute to advancing CO2-EGR technology knowledge. Additionally, assessing ecological and economic impacts of storing CO2 in different reservoir types is important for understanding the overall effectiveness of CO2-EGR operations.

MRI investigation of hydrate pore habits and dynamic seepage characteristics in natural gas hydrates sand matrix

Junchen Lv et al.

Summary: Understanding the pore behaviors and gas seepage of methane hydrate in sediments is crucial for gas hydrate reservoir exploitation. Experimental data showed that methane hydrates preferentially formed in areas with lower water saturation in homogeneous sand packs, while small grain size parts were preferred locations for nucleation in heterogeneous sand packs. The decomposition process of methane hydrates was found to consist of three stages, and gas permeability was analyzed to reveal a shift in hydrate occurrence mode with decreasing saturation. Additionally, flow obstruction due to hydrate barrier and sand migration was observed to be more severe in natural gas hydrate reservoirs.

Microscale Processes and Dynamics during CH4-CO2 Guest-Molecule Exchange in Gas Hydrates

Elke Kossel et al.

Summary: This study used confocal Raman spectroscopy to investigate the exchange of CH4 by CO2 in gas hydrates, identifying both gas molecule exchange and gas-hydrate dissociation processes in the sample. Diffusion coefficients obtained from the analysis ranged from 10(-13) to 10(-18) m(2)/s, proposing a simple modeling approach for CH4 production through guest-molecule exchange combined with gas-hydrate dissociation term.

Microscale Experiment and Pore-Network Modeling Analysis of Growth Habit, Pore Structure, and Permeability of Hydrate-Bearing Sediments

Xuan Kou et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of particle size and hydrate saturation on hydrate growth habits, pore structure properties, and permeability reduction through microscale experiments and pore-network models. The results showed the evolution of gas hydrate pore-habit and its distribution in pores, highlighting the importance of pore interconnectivity in hydrate-bearing sediments. The study also proposed an equation for absolute permeability in the presence of gas hydrate, validated by experimental results.

Fine sand migration in hydrate-bearing sediments and median grain size ratio optimization of gravel pack

Shanshan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explores the importance of gravel packing for sand control during gas hydrate exploitation, finding that a D-50/d(50) value of 6.5 is optimal. The formation of sand-bridge structures at this value contributes positively to gas production and sand control in hydrate-bearing sediments.

Investigation of the methane hydrate surface area during depressurization-induced dissociation in hydrate-bearing porous media

Xuke Ruan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface area of methane hydrate during dissociation in porous media by comparing experimental results with numerical simulations. Two conceptual models were proposed based on the morphology of hydrate, which showed the importance of hydrate dissociation surface area for gas production. The results indicated the significant impact of hydrate dissociation surface area on cumulative gas production, with different models performing better at different hydrate saturations.
