Study of duplicated galU genes in Rhodococcus jostii and a putative new metabolic node for glucosamine-1P in rhodococci

Summary: The enzymes from Rhodococcus species studied exhibited substrate promiscuity towards sugar-1Ps, with RjoGalU2 showing significantly higher activity with glucosamine-1P than glucose-1P. The results suggest the possibility of using these enzymes for the production of novel molecules by incorporating non-canonical substrates into metabolic pathways.

Summary: Microbial bioproduction of chemicals, proteins, and primary metabolites from cheap carbon sources is a growing area in industrial research. Non-conventional yeasts can be selected as hosts to avoid extensive strain engineering of model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae for biosynthesis of commercial molecules other than ethanol. These non-conventional yeasts offer desirable phenotypes for industrial usage, but advanced metabolic engineering efforts in them are still lacking due to limited availability of systems and synthetic biology methods.
