Stress fibres are embedded in a contractile cortical network

Timothee Vignaud et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanical impact of interconnected actomyosin bundles on the production and distribution of traction forces within cells. Experimental and modeling results show that these bundles are embedded in a continuous and contractile network, and the propagation of their contraction throughout the cell is dependent on this embedding. The mechanism of stress fibre assembly through the coalescence of actin filaments in the cell cortex enables the transmission of mechanical forces throughout the entire cell.

Pattern-Based Contractility Screening, a Reference-Free Alternative to Traction Force Microscopy Methodology

Ajinkya Ghagre et al.

Summary: This study introduces a reference-free technique for real-time measurement of cell contractile work, with commonly available substrate fabrication methodologies, simple imaging, and analysis, as well as availability of cells for postprocessing. Through this method, different cells' contractile work can be compared, facilitating broader implementation of related measurements in quantitative biology and biomedical applications.
