Multiple Mechanisms Regulate Eukaryotic Cytochrome C Oxidase

Rabia Ramzan et al.

Summary: Cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the rate-limiting enzyme of mitochondrial respiration, is regulated by various mechanisms, with ATP playing a particularly important role. The allosteric ATP inhibition of COX is described in detail, with most regulatory properties of COX being related to supernumerary subunits. Recently, the allosteric ATP inhibition of COX was also observed in intact isolated rat heart mitochondria.
