Investigation of carbon and energy metabolic mechanism of mixotrophy in Chromochloris zofingiensis

This finding paves the way for future studies on mixotrophic biomass production and photosynthetic metabolism.

Diatoms offer high-value compounds and have potential for transformation into high-value products through microalgal technologies. Innovative approaches are needed for the isolation of bioactive compounds and enhancing productivity in order to fully utilize the notable applications of diatoms and their biologically active constituents.

Advantages of Heterotrophic Microalgae as a Host for Phytochemicals Production

Summary: Currently, most commercial recombinant technologies rely on host systems, each with its own benefits and drawbacks depending on the target products. Prokaryote hosts lack key mechanisms for producing eukaryotic products like phytochemicals, while other eukaryote hosts have limitations such as low yield and high cost. Using heterotrophic microalgae as a host system may offer a solution to these challenges and could be a promising direction for high-value phytochemicals production in the future.

Biofilm formation of benthic diatoms on commercial polyvinylidene fluoride membrane

Summary: This study investigated the biofilm-forming capacity of three benthic diatoms on polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (PVDF) and found that Amphora coffeaeformis and Navicula incerta exhibited strong attachment to the membrane, while Cylindrotheca fusiformis showed the weakest attachment. The biofilm formation was observed as early as 2 hours after inoculation and continued to develop over 96 hours, with significant accumulation of total extracellular polymeric substances (TEP). The composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) varied among the diatom species, with proteins being the major component for A. coffeaeformis, while polysaccharides were dominant for N. incerta and C. fusiformis.

Mixotrophic cultivation of Thalassiosira pseudonana with pure and crude glycerol: Impact on lipid profile

Summary: This study found that mixotrophic cultivation of T. pseudonana resulted in almost double the lipid content compared to autotrophic cultivation, especially when using crude glycerol. Mixotrophic samples showed an increase in short-chain fatty acids (C14:0, myristic acid) and long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (C18:4; stearidonic acid), which are potentially useful for bio-jet fuels and nutritional purposes.

Diatoms, single-cell algae with porous structures, have proven to be a classic replacement for synthetic silica, being obtainable through mining or cell culture. Surface modifications can control drug release from mesoporous systems, making diatoms a potential tool for sustained drug release with their unique characteristics.
