Mechanical Properties of Aluminium Metal Matrix Nanocomposites Manufactured by Assisted-Flake Powder Thixoforming Process

Saud M. Almotairy et al.

Summary: This study discusses the beneficial effect of thixoforming process on improving the tensile properties of aluminium matrix composite produced using flake metallurgy route. Microstructural studies show the synergic effect of thixoforming process in achieving uniform distribution of SiC nanoparticles, while X-ray diffraction characterizations reveal the promising effect of SiC nanoparticles on restricting grain growth within nanoscale regime. Tensile tests demonstrate that samples prepared using dual speed ball milling flake metallurgy have superior properties compared to those prepared using other methods.

Comparative Hot Workability Characteristics of an Al-Si/SiCp Aluminium Matrix Composite Hybrid Reinforced with Various TiB2 Additions

Xinrong Chen et al.

Summary: Hot compression tests were conducted on Al-Si/SiCp + TiB2 hybrid aluminium matrix composites with various TiB2 contents. The results showed that the peak stress increased with higher TiB2 content and the optimal deformation conditions shifted to higher temperature and lower strain rate. The flow softening mechanism also transformed with increasing TiB2 content.

Characterization and Properties of Aluminium Reinforced Milled Carbon Fibres Composites Synthesized by Uniball Milling and Uniaxial Hot Pressing

Buraq Talib Shalash AL-Mosawi et al.

Summary: Al-matrix composites reinforced with varying amounts of milled carbon fibers were produced through uniball magneto milling and uniaxial hot pressing. The addition of 20% MCFs resulted in higher compressive strength and modulus of elasticity compared to other composites. Factors such as enhanced interface, porosity elimination, refined microstructure, and improved wetting contributed to the improved composite properties.

Development of Aluminium-Nanoclay Composite by Using Powder Metallurgy and Hot Extrusion Process

V. Gholipour et al.

Summary: In this study, aluminum matrix composites with montmorillonite Nanoclay reinforcement were successfully synthesized using powder metallurgy and extrusion processes. The mechanical properties of the aluminum-clay nanocomposite were found to be superior to monolithic materials, with the addition of Nanoclay leading to significant improvements in ultimate tensile strength. Additionally, the optimal properties were observed in samples containing 2% Nanoclay, demonstrating increased hardness, tensile, and compressive strengths.

Effect of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes on Improvement of Fracture Toughness of Spark-Plasma-Sintered Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Nanocomposites

T. Arunkumar et al.

Summary: In this study, highly dense yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nano-ceramics reinforced with TC-CVD-synthesized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated using spark plasma sintering. The physical and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated, revealing that the increase in MWCNTs concentration led to a decrease in hardness but an improvement in wear resistance and fracture toughness. The study utilized X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy for characterization, and found that toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection, branching, and bridging of MWCNTs contributed to the enhanced fracture toughness of the nanocomposites.
