Changing the narrative: a study on professional identity formation among Black/African American physicians in the US

Tasha R. Wyatt et al.

Summary: The study highlights the exclusion of experiences of ethnically/racially minoritized physicians in the literature on professional identity formation (PIF). By using critical lenses, it reveals how the dominant perspectives in PIF research do not accurately reflect the experiences of minoritized physicians, particularly Black/African American physicians. The findings suggest that the current frameworks for studying PIF may be inadequate in capturing the professional identities of minoritized physicians.

'Whispers and shadows': A critical review of the professional identity literature with respect to minority physicians

Tasha R. Wyatt et al.

Summary: This meta-ethnography examined qualitative Professional Identity Formation (PIF) literature from 2012 to 2019 to assess its relevance to understanding the experiences of under-represented minority physicians. The study found a lack of research focusing on URM physicians and a scarcity of critical perspectives in existing PIF research. It suggests the need for a new line of inquiry using alternative frameworks, such as critical theory, to address the influence of power and domination on PIF for URM physicians.
