The Role of Power in Health Care Conflict: Recommendations for Shifting Toward Constructive Approaches

Naike Bochatay et al.

Summary: The study found that conflicts among healthcare professionals in different cultural contexts were often related to issues of positional, expert, and coercive power; rigid hierarchies contributed to negative experiences in conflicts; the presence of an audience prevented professionals from addressing conflicts in a timely manner, leading to escalation.

Changing the narrative: a study on professional identity formation among Black/African American physicians in the US

Tasha R. Wyatt et al.

Summary: The study highlights the exclusion of experiences of ethnically/racially minoritized physicians in the literature on professional identity formation (PIF). By using critical lenses, it reveals how the dominant perspectives in PIF research do not accurately reflect the experiences of minoritized physicians, particularly Black/African American physicians. The findings suggest that the current frameworks for studying PIF may be inadequate in capturing the professional identities of minoritized physicians.

Feedback from health professionals in postgraduate medical education: Influence of interprofessional relationship, identity and power

Amy Miles et al.

Summary: Our study found that the conceptualizations and content of interprofessional feedback depended on whether residents were seen as learners or peers in the interprofessional relationship. Residents relied on understanding of interprofessional roles to determine alignment between physician competencies and health professional roles, which in turn influenced credibility judgments of feedback. Despite ideal opportunities for direct observation, the enactment of feedback was influenced by power differentials between professions.

Admissions experiences of aspiring physicians from low-income backgrounds

Chante De Freitas et al.

Summary: This qualitative study examines the experiences of aspiring physicians from low-income backgrounds as they work towards gaining admission to medical school in Canada. The participants faced various barriers, including social, identity-related, economic, structural, and informational, while intrinsic facilitators such as motivation, self-confidence, and information-seeking, and extrinsic facilitators like social, financial, and institutional support were also identified. This study helps identify target areas for developing support to increase the representation of low-income students in Canadian medical schools.
