Time-resolved, single-ended laser absorption thermometry and H2O, CO2, and CO speciation in a H2/C2H4-fueled rotating detonation engine

Sean J. Cassady et al.

Summary: Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) require novel diagnostic tools for better understanding complex detonation behavior and improving performance. A single-ended laser absorption sensor has been developed and deployed for in situ, time-resolved measurements of temperature and gas species concentrations in the annulus of a hydrogen/ethylene/air-fed RDE. With a measurement rate of 44 kS/s, the sensor can provide high-quality data for gas temperature and species.

Exploiting line-mixing effects for laser absorption spectroscopy at extreme combustion pressures

Daniel D. Lee et al.

Summary: A unique spectroscopic strategy utilizing line mixing effects has been developed for laser absorption sensing of CO and CO2 at extreme pressures relevant to modern combustion devices. The study targets bandheads of CO and CO2 observed at high temperatures, demonstrating increased differential absorption at high gas densities due to line-mixing effects. Refinement of spectroscopic models enables laser absorption measurements of temperature, CO, and CO2 over a range of high pressures in a sub-scale rocket combustor operated with kerosene and supercritical methane.

Volumetric laser absorption imaging of temperature, CO and CO2 in laminar flames using 3D masked Tikhonov regularization

Chuyu Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, mid-infrared laser absorption imaging was utilized to reconstruct flame temperature and species concentration in three dimensions using linear tomographic methods with Tikhonov regularization. By improving the regularization method and adjusting the number of projection angles, the reconstruction accuracy was effectively enhanced.

Methane-oxygen rotating detonation exhaust thermodynamics with variable mixing, equivalence ratio, and mass flux

Anil P. Nair et al.

Summary: High-speed laser absorption spectroscopy was used to measure thermodynamic properties in the annular exhaust of a methane-oxygen rotating detonation rocket engine. The test article consisted of a 76.2 mm diameter annulus with doublet impingement injection, and the analysis of CO absorption data revealed the evolution of gas properties under different test conditions.

Injector Effects on Hybrid Polymethylmethacrylate Combustion Assessed by Thermochemical Tomography

Isabelle C. Sanders et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the influence of two hybrid rocket injector designs on the downstream combustion zone, utilizing one-dimensional laser absorption tomography to analyze the thermochemical structure of the fuel reaction layer. Significant variations were observed between the two injectors, highlighting the importance of injection fluid dynamics in hybrid rocket combustion performance. Theoretical and computational analyses were provided to explain these differences.

Tomographic spectrometer for the temporally-resolved 2D reconstruction of gas phase parameters within a generic SCR test rig

Sani van der Kley et al.

Summary: A tomographic spectrometer is presented for measuring gas phase species parameter distributions in a generic exhaust gas test rig for investigating physico-chemical processes during exhaust gas aftertreatment with SCR. Injection of a urea-water solution provides ammonia for NOx reduction, and distribution of major exhaust gas species pre-catalyst is crucial for full NOx conversion. The spectrometer uses a combined measurement method to achieve multiparameter reconstructions and improve understanding of pre-catalyst flow in SCR systems.
