COVID-19 vaccines: where we stand and challenges ahead

Guido Forni et al.

Summary: The development of vaccines has made significant progress, but still faces various challenges, including different target populations, immunological adaptability of vaccines, and production and distribution issues. To ensure equitable access, protection of diverse subjects, and immunity against viral variants, multiple vaccines may be needed in the long run.

Convergence and error estimates for time-discrete consensus-based optimization algorithms

Seung-Yeal Ha et al.

Summary: This paper discusses convergence and error estimates of modified versions of the time-discrete consensus-based optimization (CBO) algorithm proposed by Carillo et al. (2020) for general non-convex functions. The authors provide a rigorous error analysis of a modified version of the first-order consensus-based optimization algorithm at the particle level, without resorting to kinetic equations. Numerical stability, convergence conditions, and error estimates to the global minimum are provided for the three algorithms discussed in this paper.

A Kinetic Theory Model of the Dynamics of Liquidity Profiles on Interbank Networks

Marina Dolfin et al.

Summary: This study uses the Kinetic Theory for Active Particles to model the dynamics of liquidity profiles in a financial market, evaluating network optimality and overall welfare through modeling individual incentives and strategic network formation dynamics. Additionally, the time evolution of aggregate connectivity is used to quantify network efficiency and analyze the stability of network structures.

A kinetic theory approach for 2D crowd dynamics with emotional contagion

Daewa Kim et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computational modeling approach for studying the dynamics of human crowds with a focus on the impact of emotions (specifically fear) on pedestrian behavior. The model allows for balancing competing behaviors under different fear levels and solving the pedestrian model with emotional contagion using an operator splitting scheme. Simulation of evacuation scenarios and reproduction of experimental dynamics showed how fear propagation impacts evacuation dynamics.

Modeling and simulating the spatial spread of an epidemic through multiscale kinetic transport equations

Walter Boscheri et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel space-dependent multiscale model for the spread of infectious diseases in a two-dimensional spatial context on realistic geographical scenarios, avoiding unrealistic effects of traditional diffusion models in epidemiology. By coupling kinetic transport equations and diffusion equations, the model allows a clear interpretation of interactions between infected and susceptible individuals. Discretization of the system based on finite volumes on unstructured grids, combined with an asymptotic preserving method in time, shows the model's ability to correctly describe the main features of spatial expansion of an epidemic, with an application to the initial spread of COVID-19.

In order to stand up you must keep cycling: Change and coordination in complex evolving economies

G. Dosi et al.

Summary: The discussion in this work focuses on the relationship between coordination mechanisms and drivers of change in modern economies as complex evolving systems. Despite rapid changes, there are forces that keep the economies together and growing, with the concept of the bicycle conjecture suggesting continuous evolution is necessary for stability. Maintaining relatively ordered system configurations is essential to ensure consistency between material reproduction conditions and social relations.

The paradox of productivity during quarantine: an agent-based simulation

Peter Hardy et al.

Summary: During lockdowns, productivity is influenced differently for introverts and extroverts, with predominantly introverted groups experiencing a negative impact and predominantly extroverted groups potentially seeing an improvement. This paradox of productivity during quarantine can be explained by considering the distinct effects of social distancing measures on individuals with different social interaction tendencies.

OPINION FORMATION SYSTEMS VIA DETERMINISTIC PARTICLES APPROXIMATION

Simone Fagioli et al.

Summary: The study proposes an ODE-based derivation for a generalized class of opinion formation models for single and multiple species, where the evolution of opinion is determined by the competition between opinion diffusion and compromise process. This deterministic approach allows to recover in the limit an aggregation/nonlinear diffusion system of PDEs for the macroscopic opinion densities.

On the Interaction Between Soft and Hard Sciences: the Role of Mathematical Sciences Looking Ahead to Research Perspectives

B. Aylaj et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the potential contributions of mathematical sciences to modeling complex systems, specifically those composed of interacting living entities with nonlocal and nonlinear interactions. It addresses the specific features of living systems, reviews known modeling strategies, and presents open problems with suggestions for tackling them, along with speculations on the interplay between soft and hard sciences.
