Microstructure, cracking behavior and control of Al-Fe-V-Si alloy produced by selective laser melting

Shao-Bo Sun et al.

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) technology using atomized powder was utilized to fabricate Al-8.5Fe-1.3V-1.7Si alloy parts. Cracks were observed periodically along the building direction and primarily initiated at the outer edges of the samples. Solid-phase cracking was proposed as the mechanism based on fracture morphology. Thermal-induced residual stress and precipitation of large-sized AlmFe phase in the remelting border zone (RBZ) were identified as the causes of cracking. Increasing scanning speed and hatch distance reduced cracking sensitivity. Crack-free Al-8.5Fe-1.3V-1.7Si parts were successfully fabricated using optimized parameters and showed good ultimate tensile properties with an average strength of 454 MPa and elongation of 7.2%.

Atomic structure of solute clusters in Al-Zn-Mg alloys

A. Lervik et al.

Summary: Scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging of Al-Zn-Mg alloys at low temperatures has revealed the atomic structures of solute-rich clusters, characterized by a unique unit with high Zn/Mg ratio. The arrangement of these basic units to form larger clusters is described by Frank-Kasper structures, supported by density functional theory calculations, atom probe tomography, and simulated diffraction patterns. These results provide new insight into the early stages of age-hardening in aluminum alloys.

The unique hybrid precipitate in a peak-aged Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy

M. R. Gazizov et al.

Summary: Research on the prevalent hardening phase forming in an Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy after peak-aging at 150 and 190 degrees C using transmission electron microscopy methods revealed a hybrid precipitate with plate morphology on {111} Al planes, consisting of orthorhombic and hexagonal structural fragments. Density functional theory calculations suggested that hybridization reduces structural incompatibility of the plates with the matrix, and the incorporation of Cu, Mg, and Ag in the structure reduces its formation enthalpy.
