The study found that Ca2CuO3 can be used as an effective oxygen carrier material with promising applications in chemical looping combustion. It has a fast rate of oxygen release, high oxygen storage capacity, and produces hydrocarbon oxidation products free of CO.
Oxygen release from Ca2CuO3 during its reductive decomposition was studied at temperatures of 700-900 degrees C by coulometric titration. The obtained results allow characterizing Ca2CuO3 as a promising oxygen carrier material (OCM) for the chemical looping combustion (CLC) process in the mode of its decomposition to CaO and Cu2O. This mode provides an oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of similar to 8.3 wt%, a high rate of oxygen release/uptake, good phase recovery in the redox cycle, and hydrocarbon oxidation products free of CO. In contrast, the stage of Cu2O decomposition to metal copper is characterized by very slow kinetics of redox processes that makes its involvement in CLC unfavorable. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V.
