The plasticity, crystallization and micro-hardness of Zr-Co-Al-(Nb) BMGs upon rapid quenching and conventional annealing

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: The GFA and formation of primary B2-ZrCo phase in as-quenched Zr-Co-Al glassy alloys are generally mutually exclusive, similar to achieving strength and toughness in structural materials. By adding transitional element Nb, the detrimental effect of high Al content on B2-ZrCo phase formation can be reduced, thus stimulating the formation of B2-ZrCo phase without sacrificing the GFA of Zr-Co-Al BMGs.

Revealing the structural heterogeneity of metallic glass: Mechanical and nanoindentation

K. Tao et al.

Summary: Microstructural heterogeneity in metallic glasses plays a crucial role in influencing their mechanical and physical properties. Researchers have found that severe plastic deformation can enhance the spatial structural heterogeneity and reduce the energy barrier for shear transformation zones (STZs) activation. The study suggests that decreasing barriers and increasing nucleation sites of STZs during physical aging to rejuvenation may improve the plasticity in metallic glasses.

Nanoscale friction and growth of surface oxides on a metallic glass under electrochemical polarization

Haoran Ma et al.

Summary: Metallic glasses are excellent materials for micromechanical systems, where control of friction at the microscopic scale is crucial. The in-situ study of oxide films formed upon electrochemical polarization reveals a bilayer structure and their role in nanoscale friction. The dependence of friction on electrochemical potential highlights the growth mechanism of oxide films and contributes to understanding corrosion mechanisms on metallic glasses.
