Structural elucidation of fucoidans fromSargassum pallidum

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: The study isolated two fucoidan fractions (SPF-1 and SPF-2) from S. pallidum, which were characterized by high-performance gel permeation chromatography and gas chromatography. It was found that SPF-1 and SPF-2 mainly consists of fucose, mannose, and galactose, with small amounts of glucose, xylose, and rhamnose, and displayed different cytotoxic activities against P388 and A549 cells.

Benefits under the Sea: The Role of Marine Compounds in Neurodegenerative Disorders

Mariano Catanesi et al.

Summary: Marine habitats contain diverse bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical potential, synthesized by marine organisms to survive extreme environmental conditions. Compounds like xanthines, bryostatin, and 11-dehydrosinulariolide show promising neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative diseases. Studies suggest these marine compounds can serve as potential adjuvant therapies for neurodegenerative disorders due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties.

Natural Marine and Terrestrial Compounds as Modulators of Matrix Metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 in Alzheimer's Disease

Lidia Ciccone et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that natural products may have neuroprotective effects and could play a beneficial role in Alzheimer's disease progression. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP-2 and MMP-9, have been implicated in AD as they can trigger neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative pathways. Natural marine and terrestrial compounds have the potential to modulate MMP-2 and MMP-9, making them potential therapeutic compounds for neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease.

A novel class of sulfur-containing aminolipids widespread in marine roseobacters

Alastair F. Smith et al.

Summary: Marine roseobacter group bacteria are important players in ocean ecosystems, capable of adjusting their membrane lipid composition in response to environmental changes. A novel sulfur-containing aminolipid (SAL) was identified, which plays a key role in biofilm formation in roseobacters. The gene salA encoding a lyso-lipid acyltransferase essential for SAL biosynthesis is widely distributed and actively expressed in Tara Oceans metagenomes and metatranscriptomes.
