When Assembly Meets Processing: Tuning Multiscale Morphology of Printed Conjugated Polymers for Controlled Charge Transport

Kyung Sun Park et al.

Summary: Conjugated polymers are emerging as an attractive class of semiconductors for next-generation electronics due to their low cost, high-throughput solution processability, mechanical flexibility, self-healing properties, and ability to interface with biological systems. Studies in the past four decades have contributed to a thorough understanding of conjugated polymers, with assembly and crystallization behavior being key factors influencing electronic performance. However, the complex solution processing environment and rapid kinetics make it challenging to fully understand the assembly process.

Approaching Crystal Structure and High Electron Mobility in Conjugated Polymer Crystals

Ze-Fan Yao et al.

Summary: Conjugated polymers often have both crystallized and amorphous regions in the solid state, making it challenging to accurately determine their precise microstructures. This study obtained crystals of two typical conjugated polymers through a controlled self-assembly process, allowing for the determination of crystal structures using X-ray techniques and molecular simulations. The highly oriented polymer chains in the crystals exhibit higher mobilities and lower hopping energy barriers compared to spin-coated thin films.

High-performance polymer field-effect transistors: from the perspective of multi-level microstructures

Ze-Fan Yao et al.

Summary: The multi-level microstructure of conjugated polymers plays a critical role in determining the performance of FETs. Controlling molecular structures, solution-state aggregation, and polymer crystal structures is essential for developing high-performance polymer FETs. By tuning polymer hierarchical microstructures, guidelines can be provided for the advancement of polymer electronics.
