Mid-infrared photon counting and resolving via efficient frequency upconversion

Summary: This study demonstrated a mid-infrared frequency upconversion detector with high efficiency and low noise equivalent power. The detector not only enables photon counting, but also allows for photon-number-resolving detection at mid-infrared wavelengths, opening up new possibilities in trace molecule spectroscopy, sensitive biochemical sensing, and free-space communications.

By utilizing broadband intracavity upconversion, MIRUS outperforms traditional FTIR systems with faster response rates and improved performance. Applications of MIRUS in gas sensing, plastic identification, and rapid photopolymerization monitoring have been successfully demonstrated.
