Droplet shape control using microfluidics and designer biosurfactants

Summary: A 'shape-memorable' micro-droplet formulation stabilized by a PEG-modified protein-surfactant was reported, demonstrating stable droplets against coalescence and maintenance of non-spherical shapes depending on PEGylated protein surface coverage. Monodisperse droplets with controllable aspect ratios ranging from 1.0 to 3.4 were synthesized using a flow-focusing microfluidic device. The presence of a PEG layer at interfaces was found to alter the mechanical responses of the protein film, resulting in improved strength of the interfacial networks, offering a tailorable interface for various biomimetic applications.
