Fibrous chitosan cellulose composite as an efficient adsorbent for Co(II) removal

Shuting Zhuang et al.

Summary: In this study, fibrous chitosan/cellulose composite was prepared using the wet-spinning method to increase its specific surface area, thus enhancing the adsorption capacity towards Co(II). The as-prepared fibrous composite showed a homogeneous fiber structure and high specific surface area, leading to a significant improvement in Co(II) adsorption capacity. The adsorption kinetic behavior followed the pseudo second-order kinetic model, and the amino groups along with hydroxyl groups played a dominant role in Co(II) coordination and adsorptive removal.

Efficacy of treated sodium alginate and activated carbon fibre for Pb (II) adsorption

Ali Hashem et al.

Summary: The study compared the efficacy of treated sodium alginate (TSA) and activated carbon fibre (ACF) for aqueous Pb(II) uptake. Despite the significant difference in surface area, TSA with high carboxyl content outperformed ACF in adsorption performance. The findings emphasize the importance of surface functional groups in determining adsorptive performance.

Removal of ibuprofen from aqueous media by adsorption: A comprehensive review

Stephen N. Oba et al.

Summary: This paper reviews empirical findings on the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBP) from aqueous media over the past decade, highlighting carbon-based adsorbents as the best choice with a maximum adsorption capacity of 496.1 mg/g. The uptake mechanism involves hydrophobic interactions, pi-pi stacking, among others. Future research should focus on adsorbent disposal, process improvement, scale-up, industrial applications, and practical utilization to enhance sustainable water resource management.

Summary: This study successfully introduced oxygenous functional groups onto microcrystalline cellulose, enhancing the metal binding capacity of the synthesized adsorbent. Instrumental characterization confirmed the presence of oxygen-based functional groups and their structural crystallinity. The study also elucidated the effect of process variables on the adsorption capacity of 'FM-cell', with satisfactory predictions from the Dubinin-Radushkevich and intraparticle diffusion models.

Equilibrium and Kinetic Modelling of Aqueous Cadmium Ion and Activated Carbon Adsorption System

Chukwunonso O. Aniagor et al.

Summary: Activated carbon, with its high pollutant binding capacity, remains one of the most viable adsorbents for wastewater treatment, as demonstrated in the study which focused on the uptake of aqueous cadmium [Cd(II)] ions. The research revealed the pH dependence of the adsorption system, with pH 5.0 identified as the optimum condition, and a decrease in Cd (II) uptake with increasing adsorbent dosage due to potential active sites clogging. The study also validated the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model as the best fit for the experimental data, highlighting the industrial practicality of the adsorption system.
