Evidence for a higher-order topological insulator in a three-dimensional material built from van der Waals stacking of bismuth-halide chains

Ryo Noguchi et al.

Summary: Research on topological quantum materials with van der Waals structures is gaining attention, showing that a slight modification of stacking can induce a transition from trivial insulator to higher-order topological insulator. This opens doors for engineering topologically non-trivial edge states for future spintronics applications.

Observation and control of the weak topological insulator state in ZrTe5

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a quasi-one-dimensional, spin-momentum locked band on the side surface of WTI candidate ZrTe5 was visualized, and the bulk band gap was manipulated by strain. This research sheds light on the rarely investigated topological side surface of a weak topological insulator, offering potential for stable WTI states or ideal DS states with highly directional spin-current and tunable band gap properties in ZrTe5.
