A simulation comparison of tournament designs for the World Men's Handball Championships

Laszlo Csato

Summary: The study compares different designs for the World Men's Handball Championships and finds that the most frugal design is a good compromise in an unavoidable trade-off in terms of outcome measures. The relative performance of the designs is independent of seeding rules and competitive balance, while recent reform has increased the probability of winning for top teams.

A comparison of penalty shootout designs in soccer

Laszlo Csato

Summary: The unfairness of penalty shootout mechanisms in soccer is explored, with a proposed Adjusted Catch-Up Rule shown to outperform existing rules like Catch-Up and Alternating. A general measure of complexity for penalty shootout mechanisms is provided, enabling a two-dimensional evaluation of any future proposed mechanisms.

Modifying Bradley-Terry and other ranking models to allow ties

Rose Baker et al.

Summary: This paper introduces modified BT and PL models based on discrete distributions, primarily the geometric distribution, that can handle tied ranks, which are common in sports. The methodology is applied to various distributions, including some mathematically tractable ones, and illustrated using test match cricket data.

Bayesian models for prediction of the set-difference in volleyball

Ioannis Ntzoufras et al.

Summary: The study focuses on developing Bayesian models for analyzing volleyball match outcomes within the set-difference framework. Two major approaches, namely ordered multinomial logistic regression model and a model based on a truncated Skellam distribution, were considered to address the unique challenges posed by the set-difference variable in volleyball matches. These models were fitted and compared using data from the Greek national men's volleyball league A1 for the 2016/17 season.

A mathematical analysis of fairness in shootouts

Roel Lambers et al.

Summary: The order of shooting in a shootout affects scoring probability, leading to fairness concerns. It has been found that in certain situations, a fair shooting sequence does not exist. Additionally, an algorithm has been developed to generate a fair sequence.
