Transition metal-catalyzed cycloisomerization reactions have significant advantages in the synthesis of heterocycles, allowing for greater molecular complexity and better functional group compatibility from readily available substrates. The use of copper catalysts for the synthesis of five-membered N-heterocycles is an effective strategy.
In recent years, the area of heterocycles with the employment of transition metal catalyst has attracted a huge attention. Greater levels of molecular complexity and better functional group compatibilities are obtained from easily available starting substrates under mild reaction conditions by developing novel approaches. For this purpose, the transition metal-catalyzed cycloisomerization reactions are introduced in molecular rearrangement steps. The catalytic methods have important advantages as compared to other approaches in the formation of heterocycles bearing new substituents. The syntheses of five-membered N-heterocycles employing copper catalysts have been described in this review article.
