Unveiling Potent Photooxidation Behavior of Catalytic Photoreductants

Karina Targos et al.

Summary: The article introduces a photocatalytic system that utilizes N-phenylphenothiazine as a catalyst, revealing its latent photooxidant behavior. Experimental results show that PTH is activated through photooxidation, and Lewis acid cocatalysts are used to remove inhibitors formed during the reaction process.

Photosubstitution in Dicyanobenzene-based Photocatalysts

Sascha Grotjahn et al.

Summary: The study reported a general degradation pathway for some widely used organic photocatalysts, as well as the photosubstitution of one cyano group in thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters. It suggests that the active photocatalyst in many reactions may be different from traditional ones, while photosubstitution is an effective route to preparing diverse highly reducing photocatalysts and blue TADF emitters.

Dearomatization of Unactivated Arenes via Catalytic Hydroalkylation

Kelly A. McDaniel et al.

Summary: The dearomative cyclization of linear amides to complex spirocydic butyrolactams can be achieved by photoredox catalysis through a reductive radical-polar crossover mechanism, generating a wide range of 1,4-hydroalkylation products from unactivated aromatic substrates. This method utilizes a simple organic catalyst/reductant pair for high flexibility in product delivery, with further functionalization possible under simple conditions.

Photo-induced thiolate catalytic activation of inert Caryl-hetero bonds for radical borylation

Shun Wang et al.

Summary: Efforts are being made to develop photo-redox catalysts with high redox power, although current methods face challenges in activating bonds with high bond dissociation energy and substrates with high reduction potentials. A novel photocatalytic strategy using thiolate as a catalyst has been introduced for the activation of inert substituted arenes for aryl borylation, expanding the scope of aryl radical precursors and demonstrating good functional-group tolerance. Spectroscopic investigations suggest the formation of a charge-transfer complex as the key step to activate the substrates.

Electrocatalysis as an enabling technology for organic synthesis

Luiz F. T. Novaes et al.

Summary: Electrochemistry has recently become a versatile strategy in achieving challenging transformations in synthetic organic chemistry. The use of redox-active electrocatalysts has increased in recent developments in electrosynthesis to enhance control over reactive intermediates. Electrocatalytic mediators allow for synthetic transformations to proceed in a manner different from purely chemical methods.
