Effect of Spectral Contrast Enhancement on Speech-on-Speech Intelligibility and Voice Cue Sensitivity in Cochlear Implant Users

Nawal El Boghdady et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether spectral contrast enhancement (SCE) could improve speech intelligibility in cochlear implant (CI) users in speech-on-speech (SoS) situations. The results showed that SCE has the potential to enhance signal-to-noise ratio in SoS, rather than sensitivity to fundamental voice cues. Additionally, manipulating a female speaker's F0 and VTL to sound more like a male voice provided a release from masking for CI users.

Access to semantic cues does not lead to perceptual restoration of interrupted speech in cochlear-implant users

Summary: Cochlear-implant users struggle with restoring noise-interrupted speech, even when semantic cues are provided. This challenges previous research findings and raises doubts about the possibility of restoration in CI users.
