Recent trends on omics and bioinformatics approaches to study SARS-CoV-2: A bibliometric analysis and mini-review

Julieth Murillo et al.

Summary: The study found that omics and bioinformatics approaches were widely used in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic to determine the taxonomy and animal origin of SARS-CoV-2, as well as to identify targets for drug and vaccine development. Articles from China, Italy, and India were among the most cited on this topic.

Integrated cytokine and metabolite analysis reveals immunometabolic reprogramming in COVID-19 patients with therapeutic implications

Nan Xiao et al.

Summary: Metabolomic data and cytokine/chemokine profiling from stratified COVID-19 patients suggest a correlation between arginine, tryptophan, and purine metabolic pathways with hyperinflammation, potentially offering therapeutic targets for severe COVID-19 patients. Modulating metabolism can significantly impact the release of proinflammatory cytokines by peripheral blood mononuclear cells, indicating a potential strategy for treating fatal cytokine release syndrome in COVID-19.

Proteomic investigation reveals dominant alterations of neutrophil degranulation and mRNA translation pathways in patients with COVID-19

Renuka Bankar et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive proteomics-based investigation of nasopharyngeal swab samples from patients with COVID-19, identifying some host proteins that were upregulated in COVID-19-positive patients, and important pathways that provide detailed insights into the host response in COVID-19 infection. Additionally, the docking of potential drugs with host proteins involved in the interleukin-12 signaling pathway may aid in COVID-19 therapeutic interventions.

Proteomics and Machine Learning Approaches Reveal a Set of Prognostic Markers for COVID-19 Severity With Drug Repurposing Potential

Kruthi Suvarna et al.

Summary: This study delved into the plasma proteome alteration in COVID-19 patients to identify potential prognostic markers and understand disease dynamics. Differential expression of 38 proteins was observed between non-severe and severe cases, revealing dysregulation in pathways related to immune response, coagulation, and complement activation in severe COVID-19. Machine learning approaches were used to classify patients based on severity with an accuracy of 84%, and potential biomarkers were validated through targeted mass spectrometry assays. Two FDA-approved drugs were identified for repurposing in COVID-19 therapeutics based on in silico screening against target proteins.

SARS-CoV-2 can recruit a heme metabolite to evade antibody immunity

Annachiara Rosa et al.

Summary: The study shows that the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein binds biliverdin and bilirubin, products of heme metabolism, at a nanomolar affinity. Controlling access to a dominant epitope on the spike protein can be achieved through an allosteric mechanism involving recruitment of a metabolite and relocation of a gating loop on the N-terminal domain.

Virus-Host Interactome and Proteomic Survey Reveal Potential Virulence Factors Influencing SARS-CoV-2 Pathogenesis

Jingjiao Li et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis by identifying host proteins targeted by the virus and perturbed in COVID-19 patients. The findings suggest a potential link between the upregulation of cellular proteins related to neutrophil activation, blood coagulation, and downregulation of proteins mediating T cell receptor signaling in severe COVID-19 patients. The interactome analysis further reveals the potential mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 triggers cytokine storms through the induction of interleukin-8 and the facilitation of neutrophil chemotaxis.
