A Molecular Crystal Shows Multiple Correlated Magnetic and Ferroelectric Switching

Yun Li et al.

Summary: Simultaneous control of magnetic and electric properties is crucial for next-generation memory and sensor devices. This Co(II) complex exhibits unprecedented two-step magnetic switching and ferroelectric phase transitions influenced by changes in sulfate dianions directionality. Therefore, this study provides a viable strategy for developing superior molecular magnetoelectric materials.

Terahertz-field-induced polar charge order in electronic-type dielectrics

H. Yamakawa et al.

Summary: Photoinduced phase transition is a central issue in the field of non-equilibrium quantum physics. The authors demonstrate that a terahertz electric-field pulse changes a Mott insulator of an organic molecular compound to a macroscopically polarized charge-order state.

Plastic/ferroelectric molecular crystals: Ferroelectric performance in bulk polycrystalline forms

Jun Harada

Summary: Plastic crystals, composed of small molecules with globular structures, exhibit unique features largely due to rotator motion and orientational disorder of constituent molecules. Some plastic crystals demonstrate ferroelectricity in lower-temperature phases, particularly at room temperature, showcasing unique properties compared to conventional molecular ferroelectrics. The development of multiaxial ferroelectricity and easy preparation of monolithic bulk polycrystals distinguish plastic/ferroelectric molecular crystals as an emerging class of molecular ferroelectrics.
