Controlling phase fraction and crystal orientation via thermal oxidation of iron foils for enhanced photoelectrochemical performance

Rambabu Yalavarthi et al.

Summary: This study fabricated layered structures of mixed-phase iron oxide nanoflake/nanowire and discussed the influence of metastable FeO phase on the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. The presence of metastable FeO contributed to better performance, reducing bulk charge recombination across multiple phases. Electrochemical impedance (EIS) and light intensity-modulated photocurrent measurements (IMPS) were conducted to elucidate the charge separation mechanism across multiple phases.

Structural engineering of Ti-Mn bimetallic phosphide nanotubes for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Eslam M. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Designing advanced electrode materials by engineering their structural and compositional features is a feasible strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of energy conversion devices. This study presents a rational pathway to design and fabricate nanotube arrays of titanium manganese phosphide, which showed improved performance in terms of band gap reduction, light harvesting capability, and photocurrent density compared to air-annealed electrodes. This new approach paves the way for creating high-performance hybrid electrodes for PEC water splitting.

Multiple synergistic effects of Zr-alloying on the phase stability and photostability of black niobium oxide nanotubes as efficient photoelectrodes for solar hydrogen production

Abdelrahman M. Mokhtar et al.

Summary: Niobium oxides exhibit a variety of structures, with different catalytic activity, electrical conductivity, and photoresponse. By adding Zr as a phase stabilizer and hydrogen annealing, pure T-Nb2O5 can be selectively fabricated with tunable photoactivity. The black Zr-doped Nb2O5 nanotubes show enhanced stability and photoactivity for solar water splitting, with significantly reduced bandgap energy and increased photocatalytic activity compared to the air-annealed counterparts.
