Localized and Collective Dynamics in Liquid-like Polyethylenimine-Based Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials

Emmanuel Urandu Mapesa et al.

Summary: Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to study molecular dynamics in a nanoparticle organic hybrid material (NOHMs) system with 20 wt % silica nanoparticles ionically bonded to a polyethylenimine canopy. The timescales characterizing segmental dynamics in the NOHM were found to be the same as those for the neat polymer canopy. Detailed analysis of carbon-spin lattice relaxation times provided mechanistic insights into localized and collective dynamics, in agreement with dielectric results. The NOHMs exhibited liquid-like characteristics but had higher viscosity due to contributions from tethered polymer chains and mesoscopic structuring.

Solvent Impregnated Polymers Loaded with Liquid-Like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials for Enhanced Kinetics of Direct Air Capture and Point Source CO2 Capture

Guanhe Rim et al.

Summary: Hybrid CO2 capture materials known as solvent impregnated polymers (SIPs) have been developed to improve the capture kinetics of high viscosity water-lean solvents. By incorporating liquid-like nanoparticle organic hybrid materials functionalized with polyethylenimine (NOHM-I-PEI) into a shell material and UV-curing it, gas-permeable solid sorbents with uniform loading (NPEI-SIPs) are produced. The CO2 capture kinetics of NPEI-SIPs have shown a significant increase due to the SIP design, providing a larger interfacial surface area for CO2 adsorption. The optimal loading of NOHM-I-PEI and sorption temperature were found to be around 49 wt% and 50 degrees Celsius, respectively, while NPEI-SIPs exhibited good thermal stability over multiple temperature swing cycles. Under humid conditions, NPEI-SIPs demonstrated high CO2 loadings for different concentrations, suggesting their effectiveness in capturing CO2 from various sources.
