Analysis of oral risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill patients

Ademar Takahama Jr et al.

Summary: In this cross-sectional study, the association between oral health findings and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) among critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICU) was evaluated. Results showed that a coated tongue and oral bleeding in ICU admission could be considered independent risk factors for VAP development.

Summary: This study found that sleep apnoea associated hypoxia and very short sleep may be associated with an increased prevalence of moderate-to-severe CKD. This indicates that sleep may have a certain impact on the development of CKD.

Periodontal tissues are targets for Sars-Cov-2: a post-mortem study

Bruno Fernandes Matuck et al.

Summary: This study conducted minimally invasive post-mortem biopsy on 7 fatal cases of COVID-19 to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in periodontal tissue. Results showed that 5 out of 7 cases had positive SARS-CoV-2 in periodontal tissue, with morphologic alterations observed in the keratinocytes. This is the first study to demonstrate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in periodontal tissue in COVID-19 positive patients through biomolecular analysis.

Association between periodontitis and severity of COVID-19 infection: A case-control study

Nadya Marouf et al.

Summary: Periodontitis was found to be associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 complications, including death, ICU admission, and need for assisted ventilation. Additionally, COVID-19 patients with periodontitis had higher levels of white blood cells, D-dimer, and C Reactive Protein, which are biomarkers linked to worse disease outcomes.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of geographic differences in comorbidities and associated severity and mortality among individuals with COVID-19

Bhaskar Thakur et al.

Summary: COVID-19 patients commonly have comorbidities such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, with chronic kidney or other renal diseases, cerebrovascular accident, and cardiovascular disease associated with higher severity and mortality rates. There is considerable variation in comorbidity prevalence, severity, and mortality across different geographic regions, with the highest mortality observed in Latin American and European patients, particularly older adults and males. Risk stratification and control strategies for COVID-19 should consider comorbidities, age, and gender differences specific to geographical location.

Aspiration of periodontopathic bacteria due to poor oral hygiene potentially contributes to the aggravation of COVID-19

Yuwa Takahashi et al.

Summary: There is a connection between periodontitis and COVID-19, poor oral hygiene may lead to worsened COVID-19 symptoms, while oral care can help prevent respiratory infections from occurring or worsening.
