Serial blood cytokine and chemokine mRNA and microRNA over 48 h are insult specific in a piglet model of inflammation-sensitized hypoxia-ischaemia

Ingran Lingam et al.

Summary: In this study, mRNA and miRNA were found to play a crucial role in differentiating hypoxia from inflammation-sensitized hypoxia in neonatal encephalopathy. Early detection of mRNA levels and specific miRNAs could potentially lead to tailored neuroprotection strategies for infants with NE.

Global incidence and mortality of neonatal sepsis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Carolin Fleischmann et al.

Summary: The study found that neonatal sepsis is common and often fatal, especially with early-onset sepsis having higher incidence and mortality rates. Existing studies show significant heterogeneity, emphasizing the need to strengthen epidemiological research, harmonize definitions of neonatal sepsis, and improve research quality in this field.

Long-term coordinated microstructural disruptions of the developing neocortex and subcortical white matter after early postnatal systemic inflammation

Jaya D. Prasad et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that prolonged postnatal systemic inflammation in newborn rats can lead to subtle and persisting disturbances in brain development, including neurodevelopmental delays and mild motor impairments. These disturbances involve delayed maturation of neocortical and subcortical white matter microstructure, as well as deficits in dendritic arborization and spine formation in pyramidal neurons, and impaired oligodendrocyte maturation and axonal myelination in white matter. This suggests that prolonged postnatal inflammation, even without severe infection, may play a critical role in the wide range of brain pathology and subtle long-term disabilities in preterm infants.
