Dissecting the contribution of host genetics and the microbiome in complex behaviors

Shelly A. Buffington et al.

Summary: The core symptoms of many neurological disorders are thought to be caused by genetic variants affecting brain development and function. However, this study found that maladaptive behaviors may be interdependently regulated by the host genes and the microbiome. By selectively intervening with the microbiome, specific behavioral deficits can be rescued, which may change our understanding of neurological disorders.

Gut microbiome modulates Drosophila aggression through octopamine signaling

Yicong Jia et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays a significant role in modulating specific host behaviors through interaction with diet during development. Depletion of the gut microbiome in Drosophila leads to reduced aggressive behavior in adult males in an octopamine-dependent manner.

Gastrointestinal problems are associated with increased repetitive behaviors but not social communication difficulties in young children with autism spectrum disorders

Payal Chakraborty et al.

Summary: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are more likely to experience gastrointestinal abnormalities, which can exacerbate repetitive behaviors. However, social and communication difficulties are not significantly associated with gastrointestinal symptoms.
