The distribution of electromagnetic energy density in a dispersive and dissipative metamaterial consisting of arrays of wires and split-ring resonators was obtained using a simple approach. The study found that energy stored in the system can be regarded to consist of energy density of electric and magnetic fields plus energy density terms related to response of the medium. By comparing equations of motion of polarization and magnetization of the system with corresponding differential equations of appropriate RLC circuits, energy density formulas of the medium were derived.
