Only two orientation relationships (OR) between hexagonal close-packed (HCP) (alpha phase) and face-centered cubic (FCC) structures in zirconium and titanium alloys have been reported so far. A new type FCC phase (named gamma phase) was observed for the first time in annealed pure zirconium by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. The alpha -> gamma phase transformation occurs via expansion along [1100] direction and slip of Shockley partial dislocation with 1/3 [1 (gamma) over bar 00] on (0001) basal planes.
So far, only two orientation relationships (OR) between hexagonal close-packed (HCP) (alpha phase) and face-centered cubic (FCC) structures in zirconium and titanium alloys have been reported. Here a new type FCC phase (named gamma phase) with OR: < 11 (2) over bar0 >(alpha) parallel to < 100 >(gamma) and {0001}(alpha)parallel to{002}(gamma) was observed for the first time in annealed pure zirconium by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. The alpha ->gamma phase transformation can be accomplished via expansion along [1100] direction and slip of Shockley partial dislocation with 1/3 [1 (gamma) over bar 00] on (0001) basal planes.
