Effect of freezing velocity and platelet size on structural parameters and morphology of freeze-cast porous alumina scaffolds

Satyanarayana Sabat et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of freezing velocity and platelet size on the microstructure of freeze-cast sintered alumina scaffolds, revealing significant influences on structural parameters and pore morphology. The different microstructures are characterized by a specific dimensionless parameter m, providing insights into the formation of lamellar, dendritic, and isotropic structures. The findings are summarized in a 'morphology map' to establish different microstructural regimes based on specific processing conditions.

Deformation mechanisms in ice-templated alumina-epoxy composites for the different directions of uniaxial compressive loading

Sashanka Akurati et al.

Summary: The ice-templating technique allows the fabrication of multilayered ceramic-based composite materials, but little is known about the inelastic deformation mechanisms that occur under compressive loading conditions. An investigation reveals that the inelastic deformation mechanisms in ice-templated alumina-epoxy composites are strongly influenced by the compressive loading orientation relative to the growth direction of ice crystals. Different loading directions result in different deformation mechanisms, with a better understanding of these mechanisms being vital for structure-mechanical property relationships and materials design.

Role of Microstructure on Impact Response and Damage Morphology of Ice-Templated Porous Ceramics

S. Akurati et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of microstructure and direction of impact on ice-templated sintered alumina materials, finding that higher freezing front velocity results in increased impact resistance and dynamic compressive strength. Increasing freezing front velocity also leads to finer templated microstructures, reducing damage during impact and increasing energy absorption per unit volume. The relationship between impact behavior and dynamic compressive response of ice-templated materials is strengthened by these findings.
