Towards understanding the machining mechanism of the atomic force microscopy tip-based nanomilling process

Summary: The study focused on using AFM tip-based nanomilling to machine nanochannels on single-crystal silicon, and for the first time, established a theoretical model to predict the machined depth. A novel self-aligned double patterning integrated with Ga+ focused ion beam milling for silicon nanowire definition

Summary: In this work, Ga+ Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling was integrated with Self-aligned double patterning (SADP) to fabricate Silicon Nano-Wires (SiNWs) with dimensions of 35 nm fin width and 170 nm pitch, showing potential as a flexible and cost-effective alternative method. The absence of gallium peak in SiNWs, confirmed by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), indicates successful barrier against Ga+ ion bombardment and aligns with TRIM simulation results. The combination of SADP with FIB milling provides a promising approach for nanodevice prototyping.

Material removal mechanism of FCC single-crystalline materials at nano-scales: Chip removal & ploughing

Summary: An analytical model was proposed to predict the chip thickness and ploughing width for FCC crystal materials under arbitrary crystal orientations in nano-machining. The results indicate that the crystal orientation determines the transformation between chip removal and ploughing, offering insights into the machining mechanisms for FCC crystals at the nanoscale.
