The efficacy of bio-aerosol reducing procedures used in dentistry: a systematic review

Lakshman Perera Samaranayake et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the generation of bio-aerosols in dental environments and concluded that employing a combination of rubber dam isolation, pre-procedural oral rinses, and high-volume evacuators can help control bio-aerosols during dental procedures.

A systematic review of droplet and aerosol generation in dentistry

N. Innes et al.

Summary: This study investigated and summarized the generation of droplets and aerosols in dental procedures, finding that activities using powered devices produced the greatest contamination, especially affecting the operator's torso, arm, and the patient's body. There are gaps in evidence, low sensitivity of measures, and variable quality, and proposed a hierarchy of contamination from procedures.

Summary: The review examined 50 studies on periodontal procedures, finding contamination even when suction was used, and recommending infection control, cleaning around the patient, and appropriate personal protective equipment for such procedures.

SARS-CoV-2 Detection in Gingival Crevicular Fluid

S. Gupta et al.

Summary: Understanding the pathophysiology of COVID-19 remains a significant challenge, and assessing the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) has shown promising results. The study found that a majority of patients, including asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic ones, had the novel coronavirus in their GCF samples, indicating a possible link between COVID-19 infection and oral health. GCF was found to be comparable to saliva in terms of sensitivity for detecting SARS-CoV-2, suggesting it as a potential mode of transmission.
